The Death of a Friend

For me, it's a blow to the heart. An attack not only foreced upon the victim, but also on the victim's loved ones. Throughout my years, I have lost friends. Within the past two or three weeks, I have lost two. To me, that's two too many.

Detorio Butler was his name. An 18-year-old senior at Biloxi High School. A kind, gentle young man; everyone's friend. He was an honest and fun-loving guy, you know, the kind that everyone always wanted around. I remember watching the news, reading the paper, and hearing talk about the tragic event. Never did I imagine that being a victim to a brutal murder would be his fate. Detorio was stabbed by an older man, who was suspected to be under the influence of narcotics, on September 26th, 2002. One single stab, to the heart, killed Detorio almost immediately. Cold blooded murder and the killer had no remorse.

And then there is Michelle Cazeaux. A girl, merely eighteen-years-old, and a graduate of Gulfport High School. A warm, friendly person she was. Always ready to befriend someone. I worked with her at Hat Shack for a little over a month. She was a character. She had an amazing personality and a sense of humor that most lacked. She was a hard working girl and well adjusted to everything around her. She had the ability to handle whatever came her way, and she did it in such a manner that even if she was in a bad mood, it would get done, and get done correctly. She was an all around wonderful person. She was full of life and quick to tell a joke or playfully tease someone just so they'd feel better if they were having a bad day. Sadly, Michelle's life was abruptly ended on October 11th, 2002, while she was working the night shift at a GNC store in Gulfport, Mississippi. She was the only one working that night, she was alone, she was closing the store, and she was attacked in the back storage room and brutally murdered. She was beaten in the head until her death, then the store was robbed and the guy took off. Cops have the killer in custody, and it's twenty-three-year-old Jason Glen Taylor of Ocean Springs. It was around nine o'clock, Monday night (October 14th), that I heard of Michelle's murder. I was shocked and I was in disbelief. I didn't want to think another of my friends was murdered.

Death meaning "The termination of one's life". Murder meaning "The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice." Two words that within the same sentence and grouped together in the same thought brings tears to my eyes and puts knots in my stomach. Death is a natural process of life. You cannot have life without death. Murder is something done by a sick individual with a warped sense of ways, and is usually living on the outskirts of reality.

To all of you that have lost someone, my heart goes out to you. I know all too well how it feels and I know what you go through. I'm sorry to any one that has ever lost someone or something important to them.
