Sexuality Sells? But Why?

I tend to spend a lot of my precious time watching "MTV", and one thing that I have noticed is the unmistakeable sexuality of almost every video I watch. I understand that "sex sells", but I also don't agree with it.
The way I see it, the people in these videos must have at the least some talent. To have gotten where they are now. But why would they put out an image like that just to get noticed? To use your body to sell you voice, it makes no sense to me.
Example... Christina Aguilera. She is one of the most talented singers I have ever heard. You may agree or not, but we would all agree that she is using sex to sell herself. If you have not seen her latest video, let me give you a small summary. You see her in little more than panties, and a bra dancing in a wrestling ring. Over the course of the clip you see many sexual images, such as mud wrestling females, a shower scene involving all females.
I am not saying that I think we should judge her for using this tatic to sell her music, but I am saying that I don't personally agree with the way she represents herself. Although that is how she chooses to represent herself, so I suppose we should accept that.
Another example... Basically any video made for a rap song. There are almost always half dressed women dancing around shaking anything and everything they've got. And basically the reason they are in the video in the first place is because, they believe that being in a rap video will get their acting careers up and started. Most likely the only thing that will happen is that these women will grow old, and have babies, and have grand babies, and eventually they will tell their grand babies that they were in a music video. They dare not show the video to the babies... What would these young kids think of dear old Grandma?
I am unsure of why this particular tatic was started, and then adapted as the "norm". But as we in this culture keep using sexuality to sell a product or ourselves, are we really any better than prostitutes?

FYI; I am not calling or infering in any way that Christina Aguilera is a prostitue. And as to show that I am not the only person who feels this way I have a quote from Janeane Garofalo commenting on some of the females jeans/pants/skirts worn to the VMAs in 2002, "If their pants were any lower, they would be folded up in the draw back at home."
