To avoid hijacking the bipolar thread on the BPD forum: what is the difference? One cuts the other doesnt?

Bipolars are biological. Borderlines are not-more of emotional disturbances.

Bipolars cut (they do cut, hip) because of sudden feeling of being invincible(during the hypermanic state)while bpd cut to release the pain.

Cycles in bipolar disorder are theoretically of rather long duration, sometimes a few months what is not the case in the borderline disorder.

The Bipolar has long periods of remission during which he is well, we cannot say the same with bpd peoples

The bipolar will suffer its cycles, basically no matter what it does, and independently of external factors, whereas in the borderline disorder cycles are the fruit of its emotions and its impulses, in short of lived moment what explains the speed of mood swing and the misleading feeling that he has several personalities

Borderline people is unstable almost in all domains like self-image, relationships, black and white thinking, emotions , ... what is not the case with bipolar

Neither BPD or bipolar are simply characterised by cutting. Cutting is simply a side-effect of depression which can be caused by a mental disability.

Bipolar people experience instability of mood bordering on psychosis or mania, they can simply 'snap'. They are more fitting to the term insane and you could easily tell that these people are mentally unhealthy.

Borderline Personality Disorder is mainly a problem with maintaining relationships, out of a desperation to not be alone. Borderlines are insecure and this causes their instability, they act jealous and sometimes aggressive if they feel rejected. Borderlines are a lot more likely to be aware that there is a problem than bipolars, and will make steps to try and remedy it.

Perhaps the most crucial difference is that bipolars can only be treated with antipsychotics and are very often uncurable whilst nearly all cases of BPD fade away as the patient reaches their 30s. BPD is also a lot more responsive to therapy.

So youre saying BPD is more of a pattern of situational crisises that shaped a corrupt personality while Bipolar is endemic? (endemic meaning an obvious mental illness that the sufferer has no control of).

welcome, Beka n delirius.

I guess what u r saying is right, Hip. but that 'çorrupt personality' words might be a little harsh.

bi polar has no control of themselves. bpd can control but still cant help it. the negative feelings and thoughts just pops out. no matter what. can only control with others help, say therapist or someone who can be trusted and with alot of reasuurances and whatever it takes to make a bpd secure because the main problem with bpds like what synapse has highlighted is insecurity.
