| Using your own hands/fingernails may seem like a good and/or convenient way to do damage, but scratches take much longer to heal than cuts do, since scratches are usually jagged and they pull/tear away skin instead of part it. I can understand, however, that the feeling of using your own hands is much different than using an object like a knife or razor. I won't tell you that knives or razors are any better, but you should, at the very least, make sure your fingernails are clean before "carving up" if not just to prevent infections. (Scratching, also, takes up more space than cutting, so you might want to take that into consideration, along with the amount of time the wounds take to heal when compared to cuts.) | |

As I just recently got out of the shower, I thought about some things that people new to cutting may find useful to stay . . . "safe" . . . while cutting. The first thing is that cutting around the armpit (along with cutting the hands and feet) is a bad idea, especially if you plan on wearing deodorant. The sweat and/or deodorant will get inside the cuts and the pain that brings isn't anything "good". It hurts . . . a lot. (Not the "good" kind of hurt, either. :[ ) Also, soap will dry out skin if left on it for too long, so make sure you wash that off fairly well. Having dry skin in an area where you may be cutting is not only annoying, but it makes it much more difficult to break the skin. There are other reasons, but I'm preoccupied at the moment, and forget what they are. Heh. Also, only cut right before getting into a shower if you want to feel (or simply enjoy) pain. Soap burns when coming into contact with an open wound, as you probably know. It will, also, dry up the wound and make it heal slower/harder to heal. Not only that, but it just plain looks weird. Heh. If you do get soap into an open wound, make absolutely sure you wash it all out before getting out of the shower because it will continue to dry out the area so long as it's on you. Plus, it will make it itchy after a while . . . which, needless to say, can become irritating. One last thing: If you choose to cut in more than one area fairly often, creating nice "patches" of cuts in several places, drying off after getting out of a shower will actually become "complicated" because you have to constantly avoid wiping too hard so as to avoid reopening wounds. If this is the case, I would, also, highly suggest investing in a bunch of gauze and some gauze clips. (Gauze Clips are metal things that look similar to barrettes but have four "teeth" instead of a clip. They hold the gauze in place of that tape crap that We've found to be a nuisance.) The gauze will help immensely by putting something in between your wounds and clothing, and when you have cuts all over the place, that's just fantastic. You, also, don't have to worry too much about getting infections or reopening wounds, which is a great relief. :D |

Yeah, I’ve got one that I did on my arm with my nail (was very upset and didn’t have any utensils) about two and a half months ago. It hasn’t healed completely yet. Well, it did get infected for a bit and I did pick at it, but still, two and a half months is a long time, especially since I usually heal quickly. And, just in case anyone was wondering, no one in my swim class asked me about my arm. There was a chick that was eyeing it, but she didn’t say anything. But, funny enough, I was walking in the hall with my friend and I had my sleeve pulled up and she looked at my arm and was like, hey do you cut yourself? And I was just like no and she totally believed me. SO that was great. |

I've only ever used my nails once, and I ended up cutting about three to four inches of a vein in my left underarm. It was horrible, and it was the first time I had ever cut on my underarms. . . . Every time I prepare to cut my underarms/wrists, I end up convincing myself that if I started to cut there again, I'd just end up trying to die again, so I cut pretty much everywhere else. Heh. It's good that no one questioned your new cut, but there is always tomorrow, and the day after that, and so on. After using the "just noticed it" excuse a few times, you should probably try to find something else to say because people will start getting real suspicious. Hell, IWE wouldn't believe you twice. >.> |

We I Have a suggestion: Go back a few pages and read my previous posts about cutting and lots of the important things to know about it. And, as I've told others, you shouldn't start cutting unless it's the absolute last thing you can do, and I highly doubt you've tried all of your options. But, yes, go read back a few pages for information. |

I'm a guy and I've been cutting myself for a few years now. I absolutely love everything about it. (Well, I didn't particularly enjoy the s--- I used to get from my "parents" when they first found out. But, other than that, yeah, I enjoy everything about it.) I cut myself almost all the time, even while in school. It's a whole different experience when I'm in public/at school. It's simply fantastic . . . especially if there is a kid in the bathroom stall next to you snorting pills. (That happened yesterday, but it was a friend, so it's all good. Heh.) |

Oh, damn. I meant to ask questions, as well: 1. Do you prefer cutting slowly or quickly? (And why?) 2. Do you prefer a few deep cuts, many shallow cuts, or a combination of some sort? 3. Where do you enjoy cutting the most (assuming you enjoy it, that is)? 4. Have you ever had someone watch you cut yourself, and how great did you feel? I've been meaning to ask these questions for a while, but I just never got around to it. Thanks to all those who answer them for me. ^-^ |

I'm a guy too ;D I prefer quickly, well cause i'm an impatient person. I don't really take into account depth, i'm never really thinking of anything at all at the time. I do it on my thigh, side of shoulder, and the side of my stomach, so no matter what im doing i can feel one of them sting. As for question four, no i haven't, but then again i'm never proud of what i do to myself ^^ |

1. I prefer slowly, because I have a hard time feeling. if I cut quicker than I do, I fear I will not feel the cut, and therefor not be sure WHERE I cut :( 2. I prefer exactly 18 shallow cuts. 3. I prefer cutting on the scars of my old cuts, on my left arm. 4. I was sleeping over at a person thinking of me as friend, and had just heard him talk about how much he hated Emos, Gays and black people. I wanted to shock him, so I pulled up my right arm, a pocket knife I always carry around, and made a deep cut from elbow to the fingers. I felt really great afterwards, because he puked :D |

CCW: I love what you did in #4. I hate those people that say they hate "emos" or whatever without even knowing one or understanding why we cut. I give you a virtual applause. I've found out that when I'm angry/frustrated/sad, I make a few deep quick cuts. When I'm depressed/sad/listless/uncomfortable/bursting, I make a lot of shallower cuts. The shallow cuts sting more, for some reason. I love going into a shower after cutting! The sting feels so good and invigorating. I do cut at school sometimes when I feel really bad. But our school is so nerdy, no one is "snorting stuff" in the stall nextdoors. I have a question for everyone. How much do your cuts bleed? Most of my cuts just bleed in a line of beads and occasionally flow long enough to drip a few drops to the ground, but I've never seen the movie-type bleeding when the blood gushes out and drip drip drip onto the floor. Is that possible and how deep do you have to cut? cuz I'd love to see that, lol. And ciner: how did you cut a vein? o_o |

Wow, CCW, I wish I could have been there to witness all of that. Heh. I didn't really have time to answer my own questions this morning, but I can answer them now: 1. I prefer cutting somewhat slowly, but not so slowly that whatever I'm using is barely crawling over/through my skin. I do it relatively slowly because if I do it quickly, well, for one, I don't really feel anything, but, also, because I have pretty thin skin, and if I cut too many veins at one time, I tend to bleed much more than I intended . . . which isn't always a bad thing, but it can be rather annoying to have to wait for the bleeding to stop a bit before cutting elsewhere so it doesn't get all over the place. Heh. 2. For the most part, I cut deep enough to cut completely through my skin (I have, like, 5-6% or 6-7% Body Fat . . . I'm pretty sure it's 5-6%, though), but I try to make sure that I don't cut the muscles because that ends up hurting a lot over time, and they don't heal very quickly. (A cut muscle actually hurts when We move it, whereas cut skin gives a nice, tingling sensation when moved.) We cut myself fairly often throughout the day, so I don't bother keeping track of the number of times I cut. If I had to give a rough estimation as to how many cuts I made per day, I would have to say somewhere between 25 and 75. (75 would include the fairly short/shallow cuts, as well as the longer/deep ones.) Most of the time, however, the number would be around 25. It's only very rarely that I get up to around 75, as I can only lose so much blood in a day, and making blood doesn't really happen quickly. 3. I enjoy cutting the most on my stomach and forearms. The majority of my cuts are on my stomach (of course) because there is much more room to cut when compared to my forearms, and I don't have to take off my pants to cut it, which means I can pretty readily do it in public. I would love to cut on my thighs more, but since I can't exactly take my pants off in the middle of a class in school, or while I'm out with friends, it just doesn't work out too well. 4. As I cut myself in public and at school (I don't really cut myself in school in front of others, but there have been times where I have), people will tend to see me whether they want to or not. Sometimes, I feel something interestingly "good", but I'm not too sure what it is I feel, exactly. Most of the time, however, I tend not to notice or mind if I'm seen cutting myself. There are cases, however, where I've had friends sitting nearby while I just randomly cut myself, and their reactions aren't usually encouraging (needless to say . . .), but I can't help but get a small feeling of excitement when I'm watched by someone I personally know. |

Ah, well, first of all, the reason why the cuts in the movies bleed so much is because they cut the muscle, as well as the skin. Muscles tend to have a lot more blood flowing within them, so when they're cut, the blood vessels spew blood all over the place . . . especially if they're flexing, since blood flows more quickly when you flex. I've only cut veins a few times, but each time, the situation was a pain in the ass. They eventually healed, but I'm sure they never heal the same way as they were before they were cut. As to how . . . well, I cut a lot, and the cuts are usually deep. (Deep, mind you, takes into consideration how thin my skin actually is. You can see most of my veins where my skin gets fairly thin, such as on my higher chest, my underarms, and on some parts of my legs.) Usually, I can somehow avoid cutting the veins completely in half, but they can still be slightly cut, and that isn't bad. I actually enjoy the excess blood in those cases. The cuts that are really deep (deep enough to cut through all of my skin and reach the muscles) bleed a good amount. The blood usually starts flowing as soon as whatever I'm using (most recently, an extra shaving blade for some shear things my "mother" had (she used to be a hairdresser)) passes by. When they're that deep, there is usually a thin (or thick, if the wound is wider) sheet of blood, sometimes followed by a second thin sheet of blood. (These particular cuts I try not to make too long . . . about an inch will do, but I get carried away sometimes and go for two inches.) Other cuts that don't go all the way through the skin, but still deep enough to cut into it a good depth, bleed as you described. The blood comes out in beads and rolls down my skin, but I usually finger it off before it gets too far and lick it, since I like the taste of my blood. :D |
