Depression is a lack of desire for action, a feeling pretty close to apathy but with more of a negative slant. It perspects your views into thinking that you are trapped or unable to change your life, and makes you pessimistic, anti-social and eager to escape into fantasy. Depression is often mistaken for BPD because of the wikipedia description of a 'longing sadness' or 'emptiness' which is infact a symptom of depression. As depression comes from BPD a lot of people mistakenly believe that they are one and the same, whereas BPD is a disorder that revolves around difficulty MAINTAINING relationships, people think if they can't GET a relationship they are also in the same boat. I'm sure if you go the avoidant/schizoid threads you will also see a lot of people suffering from plain depression, who have misdiagnosed themselves. |

I asked you to provide a biological definition, not list the symptoms. "Depression is a lack of desire for action" No s--- genius, but WHY? Which chemical activity specifically in the brain is responsible for causing these symptoms? Let me give you a couple hints. A common neurological symptom of depression is the malfunction of the neurotransmitter called Serotonin, which is responsible for giving you the drive to continue seeking activities and pleasure, learning new things and so on. Without this, you lose that drive and you don't see the point in life, hence depression. However, even this is just a symptom, and not the cause. WHAT exactly causes the abnormal drainage of Serotonin into the pre-synamptic neurons? Some kind of neurological process involved in the emotional reaction when i.e. your mother dies. But this has never been tested, and is impossible to test. By the way, antidepressants that restore the flow of Serotonin do not cure depression, and wont make you feel any less than s--- for losing someone close to you, but you will be more compelled to get off your ass and get over it. |

in b4 "oh look I knew he'd shut up" so you can get your little Senior User reputation up and get these lost young women thinking you're the s---. The fact you won't speak to me privately says it all about who's actually ignorant. |

Actually dumbass, I dont have any instant messengers installed right now, and talking to some unhinged faggot isnt motivational enough for me to install one. My original question once again is "I asked you to provide a biological definition [of depression], not list the symptoms." |
