http://www.buffalonews.com/185/story/661421.html Article talks about treatments other than medication. Options include: Light therapy - light boxes emit light at outdoor intensity to help regulate melatonin production. You can find these things on Amazon: http://tiny.cc/M7x7Y Magnetic brain stimulation - a modern-day replacement for electroconvulsive therapy, this uses magnetic stimulation of the brain to combat depression. Nerve pacemakers - these send tiny electric shocks to the brain/CNS. Approved for treating OCD Gene testing - a more futuristic possibility for testing genes to find out which treatments/medications will work best for a given individual. |

"Magnetic brain stimulation - a modern-day replacement for electroconvulsive therapy, this uses magnetic stimulation of the brain to combat depression." They CANT be serious, LOL! "Gene testing - a more futuristic possibility for testing genes to find out which treatments/medications will work best for a given individual." Dude I hope the H1N1 vaccine i'm gonna get in a couple days works for someone with my personality. Omg what if it doesnt like schizoid genes? No seriously though, before you can test treatment you have to test the DISEASE itself. If you cant biologically identify it then all these clinical tests are meaningless and likely will never cure anyone. Waste of time. |

| Sad fact for you synapse: basementdwellerism is rising considerably, with more and more people spending night and day in their cave. Light is becoming a privileged commodity, just like water is now. | |

Synapse, lightbox therapy is mostly used for people with seasonal affective disorder, which causes depression in the winter months at the northern latitudes. When the sun sets before 5 o'clock, people are getting less sunlight--particularly those stuck at work in a 9-to-5. Hip, the greatest promise for gene testing would be tailoring the dose or choice of medication based on your DNA, as opposed to now where a doctor guesstimates a dose based on your weight. And you try it for a few months, it doesn't work, so they change the dose or the pill itself. This is such a crude way to prescribe medication, yet we accept it today because it is what we are familiar with. Of course gene testing is quite far from workable right now, but that is what research is for. |

Psychiatric drugs are uppers or downers that inhibit either dopamine or serotonin and it does nothing to treat depression in any dose. Depression is a natural, emotional phenomenon and has its evolutionary purpose. It keeps you solitary and safe during a crisis so you wont do anything dangerously stupid. It is a necessary function, and it is cured when you come to terms with the crisis. In other words, only you can cure when you decide to stop being a damn pussy, AND GET THE HELL OVER IT. Antidepressants do nothing to treat you at any dose. On the contrary, it turns a girl who used to be attractive into an ugly fatass blind woman that now needs thick glasses to see properly and god knows other regions in your head it will f--- up. Gene testing will do little except help regulate the dosage. But the f---ing problem is that the "medication" is POISON. Half a cap of death aint any better than a whole cap. But whatever, do what you wanna do. If you are deluded enough to believe these voodoo practices will magically heal you, thats your problem. Im not challenging anyone's decision to waste their time or further damage their head in the hopes to get cured. I'm just laying down the painful reality to hopefully save someone a lot of hassle. |

| Hip, we need skeptics like you. Without skepticism or pushback against the marketing of drugs, fewer people would thoughtfully question whether it is the right course of action for themselves. That said, telling people to "get the hell over it" in regard to their depression is not going to help anyone. | |

disorderguy, yeah maybe that was a little harsh. I was implying they are being pussies for not wanting to deal with their problem and looking for a quick fix with antidepressants. People need to get f---ing real and realize depression is a complex mechanism which involves way more than a malfunction of the serotonin neurotransmitter and a true surgical cure would probably involve removing the memory of your mother who just died (if we assume this is the reason our patient is very depressed). Would you really want that? Hell no! The bottom line is that depression is only cured when you learn to deal with your problems. Delirius, yeah, you got it. However, you cannot prove depression is a defense mechanism any more than you can prove it is a disease. But i'm convinced it plays a necessary role, check this quote: A depressed mood is common during illnesses, such as influenza. It has been argued that this is an evolved mechanism that assists the individual in recovering by limiting his/her physical activity. |
