I'm a bit confused about sadness being a symptom of depression. I think of the emotion sad as what I feel if I miss someone who is no longer around, or I hear about someone's misfortune, or I am disappointed about something (a missed opportunity). When I am depressed I don't feel sad. I feel painfully empty, whereas sadness to me is a full feeling. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone with depression would characterize their feeling as sad. Is it really the same kind of sadness you'd feel at the loss of a loved one? |

I understand your confusion...although the way I describe my feeling of sadness or depression is an overwhelming feeling of lonliness, emptiness and complete isolation. I don't feel at any time a full feeling...except a full and total feeling of being totally alone with no place to go and no one to go to. |

| Whenever I'm depressed its hard to describe, like utter desolation, I guess you could call it sadness, but it's not like the loss of a loved one, it's more like you realize the whole world is an illusion, everyone is either dead or f---ed up, and everything you've been led to believe is a lie. and there's this weird feeling inside, like my lungs or my heart is sinking down and being sucked into a black hole and then I want to cry because there's that cry feeling inside, but I can't cry, I just keep feeling miserable inside. ??do you understand? | |
