The author argues we live in an age of narcissism, inspired by celebrity culture, enabled by social networking, fostering an undeserved sense of entitlement. Now, there is certainly a difference between being narcissistic and having narcissistic personality disorder; one is a character flaw, the other a clinical condition.

What I wonder, though, is this: is our society actually producing and encouraging more true narcissists? Have we given them full license to indulge? Have narcissists been enabled by services like Twitter and Facebook? By cosmetic procedures like botox injection? By our glorification of materialism, fame, and beauty? What does it mean to have 500 friends on Facebook... true friends, or is it just vanity?

interesting question. The 'me' generation. To some extent this is true, because the culture and political economy requires it. We need consumerism, so people can get in debt, so banks can function, and so that the political elites can continue to be in charge. The State has become huge, and extends deeply into the lives of most individuals, schooling them, taxing them, telling them what is safe and what is not. Personal responsibility is taken away, communities die and become de-personalised, if you need help, you go to paid professionals (modern day priests) lincesed by the State. The State creates millions of jobs. Predator/parasitic type individuals can get a head in such cultures, if they can get into positions of power, not through merit but through politicking they can be hugely rewarded.

I'm working very hard at teaching my son empathy. (I have secondary custody because of a duo of chronic illnesses that make it difficult for me to meet his social needs.)

His father is a ZERO empathy guy when it comes to women.

So I'm doing everything I can to teach him while he's young. When something hurts his feelings, I can later reference that memory to help him understand when he's hurt someone elses feelings.

Our media finds it so funny to be rude, demoralizing and demeaning. Our culture is definitely going into the toilet. Being in Generation X, I was raised in a very self-centered generation. I fear Generation Y will be even more self-centered if we don't thwart it early.

At least with them going through this economic hades (caused in great part by X), they are learning what it is like to earn what they get instead of charging it. They are learning -- through their parents -- the pitfalls of magical thinking. They will learn by hard knocks that you actually have to work hard to earn money.

But I fear they will be lonely. Their personalities will be so cold and off-putting. Their vanity, in ability to feel the pain of others (when they hurt them), their dependence on the internet for friends, will isolate them in ways never before seen on our planet.
