Treatment by prescription is on the rise, with 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 20 children having used a mental health drug in 2006. This is a 73% increase for adults and 50% increase for kids in the decade since 1996. An estimated 22% of American adults suffer from a mental disorder in a given year. A few things come to mind. One, these figures may reveal over-diagnosis, but nevertheless mental disorders are very common. If you suspect you may be suffering from a disorder, take heart knowing that you aren't "weird", "crazy" or even very unusual. Secondly, I am left to wonder why we are such a disordered nation. Could it be the culture? Materialism? Isolation? Loss of purpose? Chemicals in our environment? Stress? | I think it is disturbing how over-medicated society is. I know that people have problems, but the data you highlight showing the increase in medication is truely frightening. The pharma companies must be rolling in the dough. | |

Don't you think this is partly because mental therapy is more and more accepted with time? I'm mean the real classification of narcissist didn't even exist until the 90s, right? I think comfort with the idea of therapy (loss of stigma) is letting more people get help; accounting for the higher number of people diagnosed. Doesn't everyone have some of these symptoms? I strongly suspect everyone in my family what test VH in multiple categories on the test. Not just from one person having an issue, but for all of the issues that play into each other. |

| I think a lot of people are withdrawing into themselves, isolating themselves because they think other people don't know/like them. So everyone is isolated and no one knows the other person is feeling similarly. Just a thought. | |
