Even though this song has been played out beyond almost any other NiN song, it still sticks out in my mind as one of my favorites. I am going to use myself and my ex as examples of my interpretation. I believe that the beinning of the song, starts out as my ex, (Tori) who let me have only so much control. She allowed me to get in, but only so far.
"Help me, I broke apart my inside!" This line, I believe means that Tori has broken up with me, and I've killed my soul and insides because I long for the freedom that brings me life.
The famed, "I wanna fuck you like an animal," line means that I want to get as close to Tori as anyone could possibly get, and I only feel "Closer to God", by doing so.
"You can have my isolation," ect., ect. The words basically speak for themselves.
"Through every forest, above the trees. Within my stomach, scraped off my knees. I taste the honey, inside your hive. You are the reason... I stay alive." This of course means, that Tori is the only life that rushes through my dead body. God, I love this song!!! And one more thing. Tori... if you never read this, I just want you to know, that you are the only thing that keeps me alive. You are what gets me closer to God. So close, that I'm probably sitting in his lap. Thanks.

I'm not sure, but I think this is my faveriote NIN song. The famous "I want to fuck you like an animal" line is not, I would be willing to bet, about some domination fetish or a control thing. I feel that it's saying "I want to throw our inhibitions aside." Do it wild. This is someone who wants this other person so badly. I know the feeling. To leave out as many details as possible, there is a particular young lady who I happen to be crazy about. She doesn't know, of course. I have no plans to tell her, it would only serve to cause pain for me, and make her decidedly uncomfortable. But she definately gets me closer to God(s). I can understand wanting to just rip off your clothes and fuck somebody like an animal, wanting to feel them from the inside, do it every way possible, and two or three ways that you're pretty sure aren't. When you get a shot of lust so powerful that you would do anything and everything. For me, that's what closer is about.

Whoa. This is the best song ever. I see this so much as the connection that a man and a woman have when they get close together. Me and my girlfriend have been going out nine months and i feel this so much. the "closer to god" is what its all about. its not so much god but the feeling of something supreme above everything else and when I'm with my girlfriend is when I'm closest to the supreme feeling or being. The last four lines of this song are also really symbolic in our relationship because I had planned on killing myself the day after we started going out (the anniversary of my father's death) and she really is the only reason I stay alive. I drink the honey inside your hive to me is the way I feed off of her life source. Without her I'm nothing.

I think closer is a love song in Trent's own way. It's sexy, smart, and I would definitely sing it to my boyfriend. Wait, I already have. I think its great that Trent sings what he feels and if his idea of a "love song" is saying " I wanna fuck you like an animal," then more power to him.
